Injured Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom to undergo Tommy John surgery, ending season.

Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom will undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his season and first year with the team. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner had signed a $185 million, five-year contract with the AL West-leading Rangers. General Manager Chris Young said the decision to undergo surgery came after an MRI on deGrom’s right elbow, which showed significant structural damage and more inflammation than previously thought. The surgery will be performed next week, and both Young and deGrom are hopeful for a full recovery. DeGrom’s goal is to be back near the end of next season. He had pitched only 30 1/3 innings with Texas, but the team won all six games he started. Before joining the Rangers, deGrom played his first nine big league seasons with the Mets, but his last two years were limited by injuries. In 2021, he had a career-low 1.08 ERA over 92 innings before missing the final three months with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow.
